The Hulk: as poked at by a Comic Geek.
This was a film very much made for geeks by geeks, that just so happens to be catered to the masses. Which isn't a review so much as a blanket statement.
**I won't pick at the Medical/Science of it as that is ALL bad, but we know it and forgive Marvel for it anyway**
- for all the slow-ass romantic scenes added for girls interest. This Girl = Bored as Fuck. With the exception of the one funny one, which could still stand some editing but at least it kept pace.
+ Apparently this director coined in on that Liv Tyler can only be convincing if she speaks very rarely. Now if only they could use some of that special effects budget to superimpose Jennifer Connelly's face when needed.
- The army, just being crap. I can't go into it, because we'd be here forever... but the only convincing thing they did was when an Infantry soldier opened missile launcher container to reveal his bitchin' weapon and whistles "sweet!" under his breath. Everything else was crap.
+ New York being bashed but good. I blame Highlander for starting this yen for me. Generic destruction like that of Cloverfield cannot compare to the specifics of seeing the Apollo theater get bum-rushed.
- New Yorkers. Being stupid enough to stick around for the show. Definitely not in Harlem. I'd blame the crap army, but...meh.
+ The Hulk, having kindly features, being the most like the comic as has seen the light of film, even having fingerprints, being so awesome and life like--
- --unless in a scene shared. If there is anyone else in the shot than it all comes away like bad puppetry. Making it rain all the time to obscure your fuck ups doesn't make it any less fucked up.
+ Edward Norton being appropriately emo... I wasn't eager about his cast before but I feel it'd make Bill Bixby proud. Speaking of--
Comic vs. Film notations: [I'm not an expert, never been much of a fan but this is based on what I have in house and what from my childhood I can recall.]
Now, mind you, if you've read that and you're fine with it, you're in for a treat. If you're not a fan of smashing and bashing violence I don't know what would incline you to see the Hulk. 'Cuz as we all know "Hulk, SMASH!!"

- Double + on the many nods to "The Incredible Hulk (1970 TV Series)
- Bill Bixby's lovely face filling the screen while Edward Norton channel surfs and catches The Courtship of Eddie's Father.
- side note: no one can play kindly, unassuming Bruce Banner like Bill can, but Edward made a close second.
- Lou Ferrigno, looking ace for a 57-year-old.
- The Piano playing while Bruce wandered. just, Guh!
- The double up on Lou Ferrigno, as he revisted the Hulk's voice. Bless.
Comic vs. Film notations: [I'm not an expert, never been much of a fan but this is based on what I have in house and what from my childhood I can recall.]
- The Gray Hulk on NOT BEING GRAY.
- Why have a line that says "not the green one" when you've made them both Green! -flail-
- Much of the Incredible Hulk was intended to mirror the concept of 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' (seriously, I could write an essay) for this reason Bruce Banner is medically orientated, well-meaning, unassuming and all around likable guy. The Hulk by comparison is wrathful, careless and a huge bundle of rage.
- This is why the Eric Bana movie was for shit, he was always two seconds away from a temper tantrum. First & Last time I'll mention the 2003 Ang Lee's well-intentioned but fool-hearty film.
- When the Hulk (any version as it stands in Marvel) appears Gray it is at its weakest, least intelligent and most savage.
- Only this Blonsky character (who's a real douche) can out Hulk the Hulk in a manner of seconds. Out talk, out reason, out muscle...ok, out-muscle maybe but everything else. Being bone-y doesn't in fact make you Gray. No, just no. Tim Roth, you're still awesome in my book! You were by far the most likable army guy there... which is almost a compliment.
- Since we have Blonksy (who is later to be the Super Villain knowns as The Abomination), does this mean no Rick Jones? Curious, not being judgy at all. I'm open to change, for example--
- Samuel Sterns a.k.a. Mister Blue ...or better yet The Leader.
- I blanked on him at first because he's nothing like that in the comic.
- And thank god the film version is nothing like the comic! He will now make a genuinely believable villain. I'll explain.
- Comic!Sam Sterns is a nobody, know-nothing, janitor who chances on Gaama exposure direct to his brain that makes him Evil Genius(tm) known as The Leader. With a Big head to boot, literally.
- Movie!Sam Sterns is already a wicked smart doctor, with motives however misguided, that we've gotten such a careful and subtle glimpse to. Now we can easily entertain the concept of him becoming a villain from this point out-- ah, such a perfect cut-away shot, too!
- Although it would have been more canonical for The Leader/Dr. Stern to approach Gen. 'Thunderbolt' Ross in the last scene... but you know that cwazy Iron Man... speaking of which...
- Some Last Film Notes:
- The movie should have ended one scene earlier.
- Really, Tony Stark, I know you think it is but the world isn't all about you. Strut your shit after credits like a good bit of fodder. I blame this on Robert Downey Jr, cuz I can and you are awesome enough to bare it with a swagger & a grin. ^_^
- Tiniest screen reference to Nick Fury, who's awesomeness cannot be summarized. It needed a revisit over breakfast with jlh the next day.
- But the army's shoddy hacking into S.H.E.I.L.D. got you exactly all the wrong attention you so deserve. Not enough space in all of the Internets for me to explain the awesome that is Nick Fury, nevertheless the choice of using Ultimate Marvel 's version of him. To much 'wow' to comprehend.
Now, mind you, if you've read that and you're fine with it, you're in for a treat. If you're not a fan of smashing and bashing violence I don't know what would incline you to see the Hulk. 'Cuz as we all know "Hulk, SMASH!!"

- Putting it simply he will be the Hulk's side-kick.
- His inclusion in the movie, while not necessary, provided a well-roundedness to the Hulk Universe.
- Later his (successful albeit temporary) attempts to cure Bruce lead to his mild exposure, which provide him with some super natural abilities, most of which heighten his own natural talents. [I.E. mildly empathic, some super-strength and invulnerability varying on the length of his hair. Get it, 'Samson'...]
- He's not super hot yet but he will be, what with the back length Green hair and soo much badd-assery.
- His emo almost out-rivals Bruce's. Almost.
- Although his part was small, his sympathy, straightforwardness, compassion not only make him a good Doctor but a great ally. In his two brief scenes in the film this is well-preserved.
- Oh, yeah and he's an incurable flirt. (I remember this one time, he was into Polaris only she had her jaw wired at the time, then her emotional yet hilariously miss-aimed tantrum at him offering her sweets! God, he never learns!) He was into Betty but never in a real way, because he always knew about Bruce.
